My first year of college I was very unprepared and uneducated about what to buy for my dorm room, and quite frankly there’s a lot of things you need (and a lot of things you could potentially forget). I believe I have finally mastered the science of what a typical girl needs to bring to college and what she needs to leave at home. So here is my personal packing list I have made and some things I will be bringing to my new home this year! I have also added a few of my favorite items in here that you are more than welcome to explore!
Twin XL Comforter — This comforter is the one I currently use in my dorm room and I love it! It fits true to size and it’s so comfortable. The fabric feels really luxurious and warm. It’s also really easy to wash.
Arm Pillow — This arm pillow is one similar I use in my room. It’s great when you want to watch tv or do homework with. I also like the color because it can go with almost any color scheme and it’s hard to get dirty.
Nail Polish Remover
String Lights — I have a set of these lights and they’re a great decoration item to add a little charm to any room. They have a remote control so you change the settings on them, and the best part? You can mold them to any shape since they’re made with copper wiring! They’re also waterproof so you can use them outside!
Decorative Rug — This rug is the one I used my freshman year of college! It was very soft and felt really nice on my feet, and fit the dimensions of my room perfectly! (and it’s currently on sale!)
LOTS of Command Strips
Storage Crates — I had a similar set of these in my room that we used to store cable wires and extra extension cords. We also had one where we stored all of our plastic silverware, plates, snacks, etc.
Duffle Bag — For overnight trips, this bag was awesome! It had so many pockets to store items in to keep everything organized, and it was really spacious! I could hold a weeks worth of clothes inside, and the straps made it easy to carry when it was packed to it’s maximum hold.
Rubbermaid Tubs and Bins
Jewelry Organizer — Hanging jewelry organizers saved me! I just hung it in my closet and stored all my bracelets, earrings, and necklaces in it. It kept everything organized and saved me a lot of space.
Broom and Dustpan
Scarf Hanger — I use this one to hang all of my scarves. It’s a pretty design and holds A LOT of scarves. Don’t be fooled by the size, I can hang at LEAST 20-30 scarves from this. I like to sort mine by color so I put pinks in one loop, blues in another, etc.
Backpack — I am OBSESSED with Jansport backpacks. The one I have I’ve used for three years now. They’re so durable and can hold a lot of stuff! Perfect for the student who has to carry all their textbooks around like me. And, the best part? They’re machine washable! Mine get’s super dirty and it’s great that I can just throw it in the washer. They also come in a wide range of colors!
Notebooks — I love watercolor everything (as you can tell by my header), and these notebooks are super cute and stand out in any classroom! The covers are super smooth and great in design and fit slimly into any backpack.
Planner — This is my FAVORITE go to Planner. They’re called Passion Planners and have helped me map out my whole school year. My favorite part about them is how they have time slots so you can map out your whole day from beginning to end. Inside are inspirational quotes and lots of space to take notes in the back. I recommend this planner to anyone who is trying to reach their goals and want that little extra push to help them get there.
Pens — I’m going on year three with these pens and the ink still hasn’t faded! I’m one of those girls who likes to color code their planners and these pens are great for that. They’re fine liner pens and come with their own case!
Camera — Easily my favorite item on this entire list. I use a Canon Rebel T5i and it’s such a great camera. I bought this entire expansion pack, and the camera plus everything else was only $800. THIS PACK IS EVEN CHEAPER NOW! It comes with two lenses, filters, tripod, flash, battery card, and so much more. That’s an AMAZING deal for all of those items. Any person who is looking to take up photography as a hobby, I highly recommend this camera.
Coffee Maker — Keurig’s are great if you’re looking at a single cup coffee maker. They’re super easy to use and come in my favorite color of turquoise/mint.
Rain Boots — Rain boots are a must in college. Running to class in the rain really took a toll on my shoes and I was left with wet socks and feet then entire rest of the day. It’s not a pleasant feeling. These rain boots saved my life and made my walk to class so much more enjoyable. And, I was able to enjoy jumping in those big puddles a lot more. (I’m still a kid at heart, what can I say?).
My Favorite Extras
Mermaid Blanket — I got this one last Christmas and it’s so warm and snuggly! I usually wear it when I’m studying and want something just to keep my legs warm and my arms free.
Yoga Mat — I took a few yoga classes at my University’s recreational center and I always felt gross using the mats they provided, which influenced me to get my own! These yoga mats are super easy to carry and made of great material that feels great on my feet.
Shower Radio — This is the exact shower radio I use when I shower. It hooks up to the blue tooth on my iPod (Yes, I still use an iPod, I guess I’m too old school) and plays high-quality sound through it. It also has a suction cup on the back so you can stick it to the wall.
Cell Phone Holder
