When I arrived at college, sharing a room with another person was very new to me. I had grown up always having my own living space and never having to share it with anyone. Although I have a brother, the only thing we shared was a bathroom, and for the MOST part it went along just fine.
I’ve heard roommate stories that sound so perfect they belong in a fairytale book, others, not so much. Whether you know your roommate or you’re living with a complete stranger, it’s good to know a few things about them. Getting to know the other person and what makes them tick or flourish can solve a lot of issues down the road.
Here are a few questions you should think about asking your future roommate.
Questions To Ask Your Future Roommate
What does your class schedule look like?
What supplies are you bringing to the room?
What are your biggest pet peeves?
What time do you usually go to bed?
What time do you wake up?
What items can we share?
What items are off limits?
What temperature do you like the room being at?
How do you study?
How do you want to split costs on things we buy together?
Should we decorate the room to a color scheme?
Are there any weird things you do when you sleep? (Sounds like a weird question, but trust me, ASK. I had roommates who talked in their sleep, snored, SANG in their sleep. I thought there was only one way to hit the hay. Apparently, I was wrong.)
Are you generally an organized person?
Should we have a cleaning schedule?
Do you smoke?
Do you drink?
Will you be keeping anything illegal in the room?
When do you typically shower?
Will you be having a lot of guests over?
Will you be having guys over?
Do you mind if guys come over?
What are some rules/restrictions we should set up?
Do you have any health problems I should be aware of?
How often are you going to be in the room?
What activities do you plan to be involved in?
