There’s college, and then the Greek part of college containing fraternities and sororities. My freshman year I went through the recruitment process and was ecstatic about my end results! I found a forever home in my sorority and I met some great new best friends and future roomies! But the process was really quite scary. It was all unpredictable. I’m used to being able to be in charge of my life and all my decisions, but this part was out of my hands. I was also really unfamiliar about how the whole process went. Here is my breakdown of how sorority recruitment goes!
First off, you are most certainly not going to be going through this process unguided. Every person who is rushing is going to be split off into several different groups led by having recruitment helpers known as Pi Chi’s, but they’re called different things on every campus. They are people who are very familiar with the recruitment process while being unaffiliated with any sororities during the duration of rush. Their job is to make sure your recruitment process goes smoothly and calmly, as well as making sure you’re informed about every phase of recruitment. My Pi Chi’s were great and were eager to answer my questions as well as keeping me energized through the whole week as my energy began to fade after long tiring days.
It’s A Long Process
Recruitment sometimes lasts about a week and you’ll have events nearly every day! You wouldn’t think meeting a bunch of new women is tiring but it can wear you down for sure. Make sure you’re taking care of your health and resting up before each day. Also, you CAN’T SKIP EVENTS. Skipping an event can get you removed from recruitment which isn’t fun, so you have to make it to everything! Make sure to clear up your schedule if you’re looking into rushing and make sure you make it to every event!
Visiting the Houses
This part of recruitment is the most fun to me because you finally get to visit all the sororities! Your recruitment leaders are going to lead you to every house and assist you in getting ready to go inside. You’ll usually have some buffer time between houses so this is a great time to fix your hair, use the bathroom, or just relax for a few minutes before it’s time for everything to start. It’s also common for everyone to line up in alphabetical order, so you’ll get to know the people who stand next to you pretty well over the next three few days.
Finally, after all the waiting and anxiety, the doors will open to ALL the sorority houses and the songs will start. Oh yes, there’s singing. Each sorority has a few songs or cheers they perform before they let you into the house telling you what the sorority is all about while keeping you very entertained. They will also be very, VERY loud. Since all the sororities are doing their cheers at the same time they want to make sure they catch your attention, even if that means stealing it away from another house.
Time To Go Inside!
After all the songs have ended, you will finally be invited into the house! As all potential new members start to file in single file, you’ll be paired up with a girl in that sorority to talk to. In that small span of time, they want to know everything there is to know about YOU. You’re going to be asked a lot of questions so the sorority can determine if you’d be a good fit for their house. The best advice I can give you is to just be yourself! You may really want to be a member of a certain sorority, but if you don’t exactly mesh well with them, why would you want to be a member of a sorority that doesn’t click with you? I always say to keep an open-mind when entering the process because you never know, you might find your future home where you least expect it!
Top and Bottom Picks
After a long and exhausting day, it’s time to head back to your home fort with your recruitment group and submit your top picks for the day. This is where you’re going to rank the sororities you visited. As much as you’ll want to tell everyone which house you’d LOVE to be a member of or hate, this process should be kept very discreet. Every sorority has something unique to offer to your college campus, and talking bad about certain ones don’t exactly make a good impression on you, and if you’re overheard doing so, you could be kicked out of recruitment. I encourage potential new members to keep their opinions to themselves, whether positive or negative because you never know who could be listening.
The Day After…
It’s now the next day of recruitment! You’re waiting eagerly for your agenda for the day to see which houses you’ll be visiting and…your top pick didn’t make the list. At my campus, there are way too many girls and not enough sororities, so you may not get asked back to every sorority you wanted. It sucks, believe me. It happened to me! I had really great chemistry with a girl I talked to at a particular house and had an amazing conversation. I was CERTAIN I was getting asked back, and then was heartbroken when I wasn’t. I encourage you to trust the process. I was upset but later found out that I wouldn’t have thrived as well in that sorority than in the one I’m currently in. I’m so happy I chose the sorority I did because I’ve made so many amazing friends and built some great relationships with them! Just because your top pick didn’t want you, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other great sororities out there! There are, believe me, because I got accepted into a pretty great one.
Finally, after all the waiting and anticipation, it’s BID DAY! You know, that wonderful day you get to meet your forever sisters! This day you’ll probably want to wear a simple pair of shorts and a tank top because you’ll be getting a t-shirt from your sorority, and you don’t want to be carrying your old shirt around! Basically, everyone who is receiving a bid is all gathered someplace, usually outside in a big area, and by the way, there WILL be spectators. People from all around campus are going to be watching all the action, because who doesn’t like watching girls scream and cry over a piece of paper! At a certain time, you’ll be invited to open your bid card and see who you got! And then everyone runs to their sorority house for a big party! Ours was jungle themed and there was catered Pineapple Whip! (if you don’t know what this is, you’re missing out). There will be a bunch of girls waiting outside for you holding up a sign with your name, and whoever is holding your name up is your bid day sis or your temporary big! This is the person going to be guiding you everywhere and showing you around and introducing you to lots of people! It can be a little much at first but it’s awesome. This is also a great time for some pictures!
Trust The Process
At the end of the day, all I can say is trust the process. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes of recruitment, a lot of it I still don’t understand! But these houses have great systems put in place when they pick new members, and they’re pretty fool proof. They know where you belong! And sometimes, that’s not in a sorority at all. I know plenty of people who ended up not being happy with the recruitment process and left, but their life wasn’t over! They found other clubs and events to take part in and join and are having a blast! If sorority recruitment doesn’t work out for you, there’s always next year!
