Hello hello! A shorter post today!
My sorority rush experience was one of the most eye-opening events I’d ever attended, and also one of the most stressful. Although my college’s rush only lasted three days, it was the longest days I’d ever lived through. I remember my cheeks hurting frequently because I had to smile nearly the entire day! Although nerve-wracking, I ended up getting accepted into a sorority that I’ve fallen in love and I’ve made too many friends to count, and all I had to do was survive three days. Here are some essentials every girl going through rush needs to carry with her all the time.
Time Telling Device
This is number one because time is going to be your worst enemy! You need to be aware of what time it is so you aren’t late getting to a house. If you are late to view a house and you miss your check in time, you are automatically excluded from the rest of the rush process. Don’t be eliminated over a time penalty! So make sure you are arriving everywhere early or on time. This watch is super cute because it looks like a bracelet! You can hardly tell it looks like a watch!
You are going to be talking to a lot of people over the next few days, and you don’t want to leave a house only to be rejected over bad breath! Chewing on a mint or a piece of gum before a house ensures that you’ll have fresh breath and make a great impression.
Sorority rush is usually at the beginning of the school year in august. Depending on where you live, it may be VERY hot outside, and you may be sweaty. A few spritzes of perfume and a swipe of deodorant is great to have on those gnarly hot days. This perfume is one of my favorites to wear! One of my roommates used to wear it all the time and influenced me to buy it!
Wind a problem? Not if you bring a hair brush! I have long hair so it gets tangled so easily, especially if it’s windy. This was the number one item I wished I had brought with me because how your hair looks says a lot about you. If it looks unruly or unkempt, it may pose an image on you that isn’t accurate. Here is a cute portable hair brush that can fit easily in your pocket or purse!
You WILL be wearing heels or other uncomfortable shoes all week and your feet WILL hurt. I suggest keeping a small box in your purse because you will most likely be using them every day. I’m a personal fan of the Dory or Monster’s Inc. Bandaids.
You want your makeup to look fresh! Even just keeping a tube of lip gloss with you is enough to spice up any look if you don’t wear a ton of makeup.
Running around all day from house to house, it’s going to be HOT and you’re going to be thirsty. Like a dog on a hot day thirsty. Recruitment at my college happened in the middle/end of August, aka the hottest part of the summer. Keeping a small bottle in your bag makes sure you’re staying hydrated, and you’re keeping cool. I love CamelBak water bottles because they hold so much water and they don’t leak! I carried one around all of high school and in college and it’s so durable!
Unfortunately, mother nature doesn’t exactly let you put her on pause. If you’re hitting that time of the month, make sure you’re prepared to deal with her. It’s also good to keep a few extra just in case you need to help another girl out!
I can’t tell you how many times I daydreamed about cheeseburgers and onion rings going through rush. You’re moving nearly all the time and you don’t get a lot of time to eat. Keeping a protein bar with you or a small bag of chips can help your stomach hold over until an actual meal.
Extra Pair of Shoes
I’m not kidding when I say this, but my shoes crapped out on me the first day of rush. Thankfully it was at the end of the day, but if it had been in the middle of the day, I would’ve been done for. Keeping an extra pair with you guarantees no emergencies, and can help with the pain if your feet are starting to hurt. If you’re not able to bring an extra pair, make sure the shoes you’re wearing are comfortable and sturdy! These are a super cute pair of black heels that can go with any dress or formal outfit!
Notepad and Pen
You’re going to be meeting a lot of people and seeing a lot of houses. Your memory isn’t going to be able to process it all, not even close. Use a notepad and pen to take notes on all the houses you see. What did you like about the girls? What didn’t you like? Would you go back? At the end of the day, keeping track of all this information will make finding your sorority family a bit easier. These portable notebooks make taking notes easy because they can fit almost everywhere!
