You go to college to earn a degree, but it’s also nice to have a little fun as well. Parties in college are very fun but can be a little dangerous if you aren’t careful. My first year of college I went to several parties as a “partier” and as a “designated mom”. I learned so much from both sides that I hope you all can take into account. Here are my essentials tips on surviving college parties.
Dress For The Weather
Always take the weather into account. As much as you want to wear that cute mini skirt you got last week at the mall, December is not the time to be wearing mini-skirts! YOU WILL BE COLD. Seriously. I get that girls want to look cute and sexy for parties but please don’t get heatstroke or hypothermia because you wanted to wear a certain outfit. Always bring a jacket if it’s chilly outside and if it’s hot, try not to wear long sleeves or sweaters. You will get hot and sweaty.
Set Up “Find My Friends”
In case you get separated from your friends it’s always a good idea to set up “Find My Friends” if you have an iPhone. “Find My Friends” is an app that comes with iPhones that can track where your friends’ locations are. This is so important to have in case you lose track of a friend or just wanted to make sure they arrived home safe without going with them. I also use this feature for when I make my three-hour drive back home to my hometown or when I go on first dates just in case things take a turn for the worse. It’s super easy to set up and is a lifesaver!
Designate A Mom
This sounds a little silly but if you’re going with a group of friends, always designate a “mom” figure to watch out for everyone. This person is usually the sober driver and checks up on everyone throughout the night to make sure everyone is okay and safe. It’s definitely a hard job if you’re the only one in a big group of people, but it is crucial.
Never Go Anywhere Alone
Even if you know your surroundings, never go anywhere alone and always take a buddy with you. Most of the time you won’t know every single person at the party, and you don’t know all of their intentions. Keeping someone with you at all times lowers the risk of anything bad happening and helps you keep track of everyone there.
Watch Your Drink
I’d love to say the world is a perfect place but it isn’t. I’ve heard multiple stories of girls’ drinks getting drugged when they weren’t looking so always keep an eye on your drink and take it with you everywhere you go. When your drink runs out, get a new one yourself or have someone you trust to get you another. Never let anyone you don’t know come in contact with your drink.
Drink Lots Of Water
Always drink water between your drinks even if water doesn’t sound too. It keeps you hydrated and stops you from getting a bad hangover the next day!
Know Someones’ Intentions Before The Party
Before the party, always ask your friends about their plans for the night. For example, they may say something like “I’m only going to have two drinks and I don’t want to go home with anyone tonight.” This way, if they’re drinking later in the night and you see them doing one of those things, you can stop it before it goes any further because you have their okay to stop them!
Charge Your Phone
Always make sure your phone is charged before you leave so your battery doesn’t die in a time of need! If anything, always keep your charger handy. Without your phone, it’s hard to call for a friend to come get you or keep in contact with everyone while you’re there.
Have A Sober Driver
Never EVER drink and drive no matter what the situation is. Call a friend to come pick you up if you’re in bad shape or call a taxi. Drinking and driving aren’t worth taking someone’s life.
