I just got the notification on my MacBook that my storage place is almost full! I’m surprised, after three years of this bad boy it’s taken this long for it to fill up. I’m impressed honestly, but really in need of some space. Blogging seriously takes up some memory storage, let me tell you.
It’s a new semester so that means it’s time to clear everything out, reorganize, declutter, and get this new semester rolling. Most people think that decluttering your computer takes hours, which isn’t true at all! These first three or four may only take one hour in total (depending on how cluttered your technology is). Here are 5 simple things you can do right now to start decluttering your computer and free up some space!
Being a student, I get around 40 emails a day. That’s around 280 emails a week. I get so many emails I’ve nearly abandoned an email address just because I can’t keep up with it. Take the time to go through and delete any emails you have no use for! I’m also known to open up an email and then forget to delete it after I read it. Remember to delete all your forgotten opened emails, junk mail, drafts, etc.
I don’t do this too often, but every couple weeks or every month, I just clear out my computer’s history. It’s not that I have anything to hide of course, but all that history takes up so much room on your hard drive. You’re letting useful space get cluttered up with website history you may never use again. It takes literally seconds to clear it all out, and it’ll give you a fresh new start on your computer.
Unsubscribe To Any Emails/Newsletters
The reason my email does get so cluttered is that I’m subscribed to a bunch of store coupon emails, promotional emails, and news sites that I just don’t read or use anymore. I never want to unsubscribe because I think ‘Hey, I might need this coupon one day’ but I never use them! It’s finally time to say good-bye and unsubscribe to all the email lists and promotions you don’t need anymore. Perhaps you might save some money this way by not going out and buying anything with the coupons! Sure you saved $20, but you could save 100% by not purchasing the item at all.
Many of my classes require me to download assignments or rubrics. Those tend to pile up after a few semesters if you never get rid of them. Go through your downloads folder and clear out anything you don’t need any more for any upcoming classes or assignments. I download music, word documents, folders. It just adds up so quickly! It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to drag and drop everything to your trash folder and hit clear for good!
Organize Your Images
I know of several people who have hundreds of pictures stored on their desktops. While it may be convenient to have them all right there, they do take up a lot of space. While you don’t have to delete them (unless you want to of course), why not relocate them to Google Drive or a USB! You’ll still have access to them, they’ll just be in a place where they aren’t taking up so much memory!
