It seems like I started college just yesterday. I splurged on any and every dorm item I needed for college but in the end, I only ended up using a handful of items on a daily basis. I seriously couldn’t live without these items if they weren’t in my daily routine. Here are the college essentials I use almost every day and don’t regret buying for my college dorm and the house I rent.

This was one of the most helpful items I purchased for my dorm room freshman year. Even when I moved off campus I was still able to use them in the sorority house. My bed in my dorm room didn’t have adjustable legs so buying bed risers was super helpful. The fact that they came with outlets was an added bonus. While I had an outlet close to my bed, it wasn’t in the most convenient place. These bed risers allowed me to connect to the outlet under my bed so I could charge my phone closer to where I sleep. I had a great experience with mine so I highly recommend them.
I’m not sure what I would have done without this mirror. Probably suffered through getting ready every morning. My freshman year of college I shared a dorm room with five other girls which also meant we shared a bathroom together. Everyone had different schedules so I never knew when the bathroom would be open or not. It was very helpful to have a mirror at my desk where I could easily apply my makeup whenever I needed to get ready. I even use it in the house I rent now! Bathroom countertop space is pretty minimal so I use it in my room at my desk. If you wear makeup a lot or just need a more stable mirror, I reccommend this one.
I used many electronics in my dorm room and other living spaces. Since there were limited outlets in my room, having a power strip was incredibly helpful. I could easily move it around the room to fit my needs and it could power many appliances at once. It also had USB ports which were great for phone chargers. Every dorm room or college apartment needs one of these.
I don’t know how I used regular towels for so long. Towel wraps are so handy because you don’t have to worry about your towel slipping off. If you share a bathroom or have a community bathroom in your dorm, this comes in handy after showering. I loved mine so much I bought two. I use this thing all the time!
Lay N Go Makeup Bag
For someone who travels a lot, this makeup bag was a lifesaver. Don’t you hate having to dig through your makeup bag for every single item? Trust me, me too. I was tired of it! I got this makeup bag as a gift and I never leave home without it. No more digging and diving into my bag to find that one lipstick or other small makeup product. I can simply lay it out on the counter or on a chair and have everything right in front of me. This is perfect for people who travel home a lot or are just always on the go like me!
As a journalism and media major, I create a ton of digital products and write a ton of papers. Which is why you have to have a jump drive in college! Professors may ask you to turn in papers or media project files in through a jump drive which is why it’s crucial to have one. You never know when you may have to save something, because a jump drive will come in handy. I’ve used mine in at least one or two classes every semester and it’s a great place to store all your projects, but don’t lose it!
Phone Battery Pack
If you use your phone as much as I do, you’re definitely going to need an extra battery pack for your phone. Whether you have a long night at the library or you’re going on a weekend trip with friends, a battery pack will come in handy. Especially if you have a phone with a short battery life.
If you get cold easily, having a fuzzy blanket is a go to. Not only do I use this on my bed but I even got a separate one to bring to work! I never have to worry about being cold even if I forget my jacket.
Rain can totally ruin a good day when it comes to walking to class. If you live off campus or your dorm is far from your classes, rain boots will definitely come in handy. I never realized how quickly wet shoes can make you have a bad day. Whenever it rains, I always wear my rain boots so my feet can stay dry. Sitting in a classroom for an hour with wet shoes is NOT fun, so avoid it at all costs!
Shower caddies come in handy when you’re sharing a bathroom. Not only will it hold all your shower supplies but you can easily transport them from your room to the bathroom. Make sure to get a mesh one so the water will drain out.
You can’t survive without a great pair of headphones. You never know when you’ll want to listen to music or that new podcast. I’m personally a fan of watching endless hours of YouTube.
Whether you need a place to rest your phone for the night or extra storage for books, chargers, and more, you’ll need a bedside caddy. Not having a nightstand in college was really inconvenient for me because I’d put my entire life on it whenever I went to bed at home. Having this caddy was the next best thing, and I could even put a water bottle in it.
